Obituary

Nancy L. Whiteley, age 73, of Shelton, peacefully entered into rest on Sunday, December 6, 2020 in her home with family present. She is the beloved wife of 51 years of Richard M. Whiteley. Nancy was born in Boston, MA on July 10, 1947, daughter of the late Richard and Victoria (DeAngelis) Nielsen, and lived in Shelton for 44 years.

Nancy worked for over thirty years as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the State of CT, assisting people with disabilities in achieving their employment goals. This was more than just a career for her, it was her passion and she put her whole heart into it. She also maintained involvement in several different community organizations up until her illness curtailed those activities. Nancy always put other people first and greatly enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends. She loved gardening and growing all varieties of beautiful flowers and was a member of the Olde Ripton Garden Club. She loved modern dance and attending live rock concerts. Nancy loved the beach and vacationing every summer in Martha’s Vineyard. She was also an avid reader and loved literature. She loved life and possessed a sunny and sensitive personality, always looking for the positives in every situation. She loved everybody and was loved by everyone. She will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all her family, many friends and former co-workers. We all loved her deeply.

She is the beloved mother of Eric Whiteley & his wife Colleen, and Sarah Whiteley & her husband Scott. She also leaves two cherished grandchildren, Adrie Whiteley & newborn Lux Louise Vogel; two brothers, Carl and Richard “Skip” Nielsen; her sister Judith Ravindra, and many nieces and nephews.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic all of Nancy’s services will be held privately with her immediate family in attendance. If you wish to view her graveside service virtually, it will be held on Monday, December 14 at 1 PM and can be viewed via livestream.

Memorial contributions are requested to the American Cancer Society. (cancer.org)

I am very sorry to learn of Nancy's illness and passing. She was such a kind soul, and very dedicated to the health and well-being of members of the local community. She regularly attended our research center's advisory committee meetings and VITAHLS school project meetings held at Griffin Hospital, and provided thoughtful input and suggestions at those meetings, and also participated in our community events. It was always a pleasure to sit next to her and catch up with her on her travels and family activities. We will greatly miss her presence going forward.

I was so saddened to hear of Nancy’s passing. I remember her kind spirit and friendly disposition. She was dear to my mother, Edith, who worked for her at DVR. Nancy always spoke lovingly of you, her family, and I know she was proud of you all! My sincere and deep condolences are being sent your way. As she cherished you, I’m sure you will cherish her memory forever.

My most sincere condolences to Eric and the family. Your mother and I spent some quality time together working on the VITAHLS committee here in the Valley. We would always reminisce about the early days of Shelton Robotics. Nancy was always positive in her attitude about everything and her positivity was contagious and would always spread into my day. She will be missed, but know that her impact of bringing joy and happiness into this world will be long lasting. My prayers to you and your family. John Niski
