Obituary for Lucretia P. "Lou" Somo (Barbieri)

Lucretia Somo, “Lou” age 97, affectionately known as Nonnie, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday February 10, 2021 in Griffin Hospital. She was the devoted wife of the late Anthony J. Somo, Jr. She was born in Derby on August 30, 1923, daughter of the late Giovanni and Adeline (Del Negro) Barbieri and was a lifelong resident of Shelton. Lucretia worked in several local manufacturing companies during her career, which included the BF Goodrich Company. She then worked at JC Penney’s for many years. She was a proud member of St. Joseph’s Church where she volunteered often. She enjoyed volunteering at their annual carnival as well as taking much pride in the cleaning of the church. Lucretia loved to cook and bring food to family and friends, which included her famous eggplant and antipasti. Most of all she loved to spend time with her family, including Pasta Sundays.
She was the beloved mother of Nancy S. Opitz and her husband Michael, Mary Ann Far and her husband Christopher and Theresa Passander and her husband Rob, loving grandmother of Jacqueline Far Ribalaigua (Alex), Elizabeth Far Clement (Justin) and Michael Opitz, great grandmother of Dylan and Jake Ribalaigua and Corinne and Eloise Clement. She was predeceased by siblings Michael Barbieri (Helen), John Barbieri (Mable), Josephine DiDonato (Peter) and an Infant Sister. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews locally and out of state.
A public walk-through visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday February 19, 2021 from 9:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Rd. Shelton. Visitors are required to wear masks and social distance as they walk through, pay their respects and exit without lingering to ensure all guests can come through.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated following the visitation at 11:00 am on Friday at St. Margaret Mary Church, 50 Donovan Lane Shelton. Those who can not attend can watch the Mass on live stream. Burial will follow at Mt. St. Peters Cemetery in Derby. Mask and Social Distancing are required at the church and cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society 237 Roosevelt Dr. Derby, CT 06418 or a Mass can be offered at the Church.
