Obituary for Edwin J. Hellauer

Mr. Edwin J. Hellauer, age 87, of Shelton passed away peacefully in his sleep at Griffin Hospital, surrounded by his loving family, on Friday, April 9, 2021. He was the beloved husband to Carol Osiecki Hellauer for 63 years and father to sons Edwin Jr. and Brian. Ed was born in Derby, CT, on December 28, 1933, to Otto Eugene and Marjorie Parker Hellauer of Derby and Shelton.

He graduated from Huntington School and was a proud member of the Shelton High School Class of 1951, where he played on the football team. Ed served in the United States Navy for four years, from 1952 to 1956, during the Korean Conflict. He went to work in the construction industry upon his return stateside, and was an employee of the Sillimon Co. of Bridgeport, and Fusco Corp. of New Haven, where he was an operating engineer and master mechanic. In 1998, he retired from the City of Shelton, after serving as Superintendent of Highways. Ed was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in Shelton, where he served as an usher at the 10:30 a.m. mass for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 64 years, as well as the American Legion, VFW and Highland Golf Club, the latter for 40 years.

He served as an Alderman representing the 2nd Ward, on the Board of Planning and Zoning, each for one term. He was a member of the Water Pollution Control Authority at the time of his passing. Ed was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling with his family. He was happiest celebrating life’s milestones with family and friends and was delighted to share in many graduations, award ceremonies and weddings, and even the birth of his first great-grandchild in 2018. He loved to grill in the summers on his deck, and was an active and supportive member of his community. His grandchildren are grateful to him for many hours of patient driving lessons. Family and friends will remember his warm and easy smile, his great interest in their lives, and how he was always a phone call away in any moment of need, no matter how big or small.

Ed is survived by his wife, Carol of Shelton, and his two sons, Edwin Jr., his wife Lisa, and their daughters, Lindsey and her husband Tyler Grailich and their daughter Aubrey, and Christie, all of Oxford; Brian, his wife Theresa, of Shelton, and their children Abby and her husband Geoffrey Hellauer Geiger of Geneva, NY, Matthew of Brooklyn, NY, and Molly of New York, NY; his brother Roland of Southbury, and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his brothers Robert of Shelton and Ronald of Shelton and Florida, and his nephews Ronald, Jr. of Florida and Scott of Southbury.
